Tips for avoiding damage to your house during a move

When moving, people generally put a lot of effort into keeping their belongings safe. What they fail to plan for is keeping their home safe during the move. There are a lot of different types of damage which can occur during the move, such as walls getting dinged, floors scuffed, and baseboards scratched. If you are renting, then these damages may even prevent you from getting your security deposit back.

Here are some simple tips for avoiding damage to your home during a move.

Plan for bad weather
If it is going to be raining or snowing on moving day, then you will have a lot of wet, dirty feet trampling throughout your home. Prepare for this by having cardboard, newspaper, and old sheets to put on the floor (don’t put newspaper on carpet though – the ink can bleed!). You can also have the movers set up an assembly line to minimize the amount of foot traffic in/out of the home.

Prevent floor scratches
Moving heavy items can cause scratching to wood or tile floors. Prevent this by making sure to put heavy blankets or cardboard on the floor first. Alternatively, you can put felt pads on the legs of the furniture.

Protect corners and door frames
Wall corners and door frames are very vulnerable to damage during a move. This is especially true for narrow openings, such as hallways since it is easy to bump into the corners when moving bulky items. An easy way to prevent dings to corners and doorways is to install corner guards or door frame guards. These are plastic shields which can be easily installed and removed. If you don’t want to buy corner guards, you can use painter’s tape to put cardboard on corners.

Choose a good moving company
The best way to prevent damage to your home during a move is still to choose a good moving company. A good moving company will hire movers with experience and provide incentives to employees for damage-free moves. Be sure to look into the moving company’s history and read testimonials on review sites to check their reputation.
